Most study advice is folklore. Highlighting, re-reading, and "just put in the hours" feel productive and are mostly wasted effort. Meanwhile a handful of techniques are backed by decades of cognitive-science research and barely taught in schools. Here are the ones worth your time, why they work, and how to actually run them.
Retrieval practice: test yourself, don't re-read
The most reliable finding in the science of learning is this: trying to recall something strengthens the memory far more than seeing it again. Re-reading your notes feels good because the material is familiar — but familiarity is not the same as being able to produce the answer on demand.
The fix is to close the book and ask yourself the question. After reading a chapter, shut it and write down everything you remember. Then reopen and check what you missed. That effortful pull is where the learning happens. The discomfort of not-quite-remembering is the signal that your brain is doing real work.
Practical version: turn every topic into questions, not summaries. "What are the three causes of X?" beats a paragraph of notes you will only ever re-read.
Spaced repetition: review just before you forget
You forget on a predictable curve — steep at first, then flattening. If you review a fact right before you would have forgotten it, the curve resets flatter each time. Review the next day, then in three days, then a week, then two weeks, and a fact you would have lost in 48 hours can last for months.
You do not need software, but it helps. A spaced-repetition app (Anki is the classic, free one) schedules each card for you so you only ever review what is about to slip. Twenty minutes a day of well-made cards will out-perform hours of cramming. The catch: cards must test recall, not recognition. "What is the capital of Australia?" not "Canberra is the capital of ___ (yes/no)."
Interleaving: mix problems instead of blocking them
The natural instinct is to practise one type of problem until it clicks, then move to the next — "blocking." It feels smooth and builds false confidence. Interleaving — mixing different problem types in one session — feels harder and works better.
Why? Because on a real exam, nobody tells you which method to use. Blocked practice trains you to apply a method; interleaved practice trains you to choose one, which is the skill you actually need. Shuffle your problem sets. Mix chapters. The extra difficulty is doing something useful.
Elaboration: ask "why" and connect it
Facts stored in isolation are fragile. Facts connected to things you already know are sticky. Elaboration means constantly asking why something is true and how it relates to what you know. When you learn that spaced repetition works because of the forgetting curve, and you connect that to why cramming fails, you now have a web instead of two loose threads. Webs survive; threads snap.
A simple prompt after any new topic: "Explain this to a twelve-year-old." If you can not, you have not understood it — you have only recognised it.
What to stop doing
- Highlighting. It marks text as important without doing anything with it. If you must, highlight after a first read and only the truly central sentence.
- Re-reading. High effort, low return. Replace it with a recall attempt.
- Marathon sessions. Attention degrades fast. Several short sessions beat one long one, and spacing them gives the memory time to consolidate.
- Passive video. Watching a lecture at 2x is entertainment, not study, unless you pause and test yourself.
A weekly routine that uses all of this
- Learn a topic once, actively — read, then immediately close and recall.
- Make a few retrieval-style questions or flashcards the same day.
- Review them on a spaced schedule (day 1, 3, 7, 14).
- Practise mixed problem sets, not blocked ones, before any test.
- Explain the hardest idea out loud to an imaginary beginner each week.
None of this is comfortable, and that is the point. The methods that feel hardest in the moment — recalling, spacing, mixing, explaining — are the ones that last. The ones that feel easy are the ones you forget. Choose the productive kind of hard.
